When You Have To Use A Hardstart Kit On A New Unit and When You Don’t
Even though the weather is a little crazy right now, AC weather is on the way. Something that is important to remember is “All outdoor equipment utilizing a rotary compressor when matched with a TXV equipped indoor coil are REQUIRED to have a hard start kit installed per the Installation Instructions. Rotary compressors are not designed to start under the load caused by the non-bleed expansion valves. Operating the unit without the proper Hard Start Kit can cause damage to or failure of the unit. Such damage or failure is not covered under the unit’s warranty.
Also any units with a rotary or scroll compressor and a line set length over 79’ would require a hard start kit.
You can find what what type of compressor is in a given outdoor unit in its specification sheet and many of the 2023 SEER 2 outdoor units have hardstart kits factory installed. You can get more information on where in the specification sheets it shows what type of compressor is in the unit and a list of last year’s 2023 SEER2 Units that have hardstart kits factory installed HERE. I have not seen an updated list.
